Why I Wanted to Learn English ?

I never thought English would play a crucial role in my life until i faced some major challenges that truely opened my eyes. The first time I felt I need to improve my speaking skill when I got admission to a good college for my graduation degree. I realized many students around me spoke confidently in english, but I could not. I used to understand what others said, but i could not reply confidently.
That feeling helped me realize I needed to change my life, and the journey began from that day on.
Later I faced a job interview where I was rejected due to my poor communication in English. That moment left a deep impression on me. The interviewer politely told me, “Your knowledge is good, but your English needs to be improved.” I left the room smiling, but deep down, I promised myself that next time, I will speak with confidence.
I am writing this article 1 year after starting my journey and looking back I truly realize how far I have come.
My First Step Toward English Speaking
When I decided to start learning English, the biggest challenge wasn’t grammar or vocabulary it was my fear. I was afraid of making mistakes, afraid of being judged, afraid that people would laugh if I said something wrong. But then I realized if I never start, I will never improve.
So my first step was simple I started speaking anyway. Even though my sentences were broken up, even if my pronunciation wasn’t perfect I spoke. Sometimes I practiced alone, sometimes with strangers beacuse I did not have any serious friends who thought about these things. And gradually I understood that to learn English, the first thing I had to do was remove fear and anxiety. Once I accepted my mistakes, learning became fun.
How I Practiced Every Day
I did not have any coaching or expensive course. I used free resources like my phone, social media and few books and digital newspapers.
Every day I would :
- Watch English videos with subtitles on YouTube.
- Repeat the lines after the speaker to improve my pronunciation.
- Listen carefully to how native speakers speak.
- Write down new vocabulary words in a notebook.
- Try to use these words in everyday conversations.
I started talking to myself in English in front of the mirror, while walking, even while thinking. It helped me become more fluent and natural.
My Learning Tools
To improve my vocabulary and sentence structure, I bought a few books. Still, I continue to read and notice new words. The books and listening practice together helped me grow quickly. I also pursued simple speaking challenges like describing my day in English, explaining a YouTube video I watched, or summarizing a story. These small tasks gradually built my confidence.
How I Gained My Confidence
Over time and with regular practice, my fear began to fade. I started to notice small changes I could easily introduce myself, talk to teachers, and even say a few sentences without thinking too much. The best part was I started to feel proud of myself. I realized that speaking English is not about being perfect; it’s about expressing yourself clearly.
Now, when I speak to someone in English, I don’t feel that old anxiety. I still make small mistakes, but I speak with confidence and naturally.
What I Learned From My Journey
Learning English has taught me more than just the language. It has taught me –
- Consistency is main key.
- Confidence shows only when you face your fear.
- Making mistakes is a part of learning not a failure.
Most importantly, I learned that anyone can improve their English no matter where they start if they have the courage to try every day.
My Message to Everyone
If you are someone who is shy, afraid, or nervous about speaking English I understand you. I was in your shoes once. But believe me, confidence doesn’t come from perfection, it comes from practice. Start small talk to yourself, use your phone, watch videos, learn five new words a day. One day, you will realize that you can talk to anyone without fear just like I do now.
Conclusion
My journey to speak English wasn’t easy, but it was worth all the effort. From being rejected in interviews to now feeling confident enough to talk to anyone I’ve come a long way. English is no longer just a language it’s a symbol of my growth, self-confidence, and self-esteem.
If my story can inspire even one person to start their English journey, then I’ll feel like my words have truly made a difference. Because if I can do it so can you.
Thank you for reading my story I hope it inspires you to take your first step towards speaking English with confidence.
